Amid competition, people lose sight of what matters and focus on their rivals instead

• Rivalry causes us to overemphasize old opportunities and copy what has worked in the past (hallucination of opportunities)
• Companies lose sight of whether the market is the right place to be amidst rivalries

People take their personal honor so seriously they will fight for things that don’t matter

• This twisted logic is part of human nature, but it’s disastrous in business
