S – Epictetus, Pain, And Excellence Of Character

Epictetus, a Roman slave, was owned by Epaphroditus, the secretary of Nero, experiencing physical misery in his work.

Epaphroditus once took hold of Epictetus’ leg and started to bend it our of anger. Epictetus didn’t react with screams of pain, but rather complete composure.

He merely warned the master that the bone was about to snap, and when it did it caused Epictetus to acquire a limp.

There, did I not tell you it would break? – Epictetus

Character doesn’t depend on external pains, but your own disposition.
